Experimental evaluation of the effect of storage tank volume and location on the performance of a thermosyphon water heating system with a dual-purpose collector in a hot and dry climate

Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of the volume, position (vertical or horizontal), and height of the storage tank on the better performance of the thermosyphon water heating system. Accordingly, considering the optimal operating conditions of the aforementioned system, 3 stages of testing were conducted. The results show that the temperature of different points of the 100-liter tank has a smaller difference than that of the 150-liter tank. The temperature difference during the night in the horizontal position is about 4 to 10 degrees and in the vertical position is about 15 to 20 degrees. The highest temperature recorded in each tank was recorded at 4 to 5 p.m. The effect of changing the height of the tank on the collector efficiency is very small. The maximum temperature in the 100-liter tank is higher than the maximum temperature in the 150-liter tank. Also, the horizontal 100-liter tank has the best performance with an average daily efficiency of 44.7 percent. Changing the height of the tank has a negligible effect on the collector efficiency (less than 0.5 percent), while the horizontal position creates a more favorable temperature distribution than the vertical one.
